Its a Small World After All

Unlogo

I just received the best voice mail message at work.  I had called a United Nations program this morning to request some information and materials.  After navigating the extensive phone menu options, I left a message, went to lunch, and assumed it would be at least a week before I heard from them.  Not so.

I got back from lunch and checked my voice mail.  One new message.  It began like this, "Hello Sarah, this is the United Nations calling.  We received your message this morning and...."

No name, no department or affiliation, just "This is the United Nations calling."

A bureaucracy as vast as the UN, and the caller identifies himself as the UN?!  It's like saying "This is God calling" or "This is the White House calling."  I love it.  Not only did it make the caller sound absurdly self-important, it also added a ridiculous bit of false prestige to my own job.  I later learned from the receptionist that he identified himself as the United Nations when he asked to be connected to my phone extension.  The laughs we got out of it provided the perfect distraction from a stir-crazy Friday afternoon.  I have the message saved for posterity.  Have a great weekend!

Back From the Brink

Green Dilly Beans has been teetering on the verge of extinction lately.  My posting frequency took a major dive in January as B started a new job and had to leave the loaned laptop at the old job. Being the computer ace that I am, I have concluded that regular internet access is a key factor in successful blog maintenance.  Without it, you're as good as gone.  With that gloomy revelation I'm happy to report that we'll soon be the proud parents of our very own computer!  While this new arrival isn't nearly as exciting (or cute) as Valentina's, it will usher in a new era of punctual posting.  See you soon!

Another One Bites the Dust

I've got lots to report on all fronts.  Sadly, the lack of a camera makes it all much less interesting.  I promise I will follow up with pictorials to highlight the knitting, snow frolicking, and eating that took place throughout the Midwest over the past three weeks.  In the meantime, I'll simply follow the precedent set by Ms. #()#@(*#@(* Knits and declare this to be a vaguely blingalicious post of my own.  Looks like Fall 2006 is shaping up to be a busy time of year!

It's A Girl!

It's official.  B is the proud uncle of Katherine Ann, who clocked in around 1 PM on Friday, October 21.  Adding to the joy of this new arrival is the fact that the occasion called for a trip to the yarn store.  She may be too busy eating, sleeping, puking and pooping to know it yet, but I see a Trellis in baby Katherine's future.

Blog Backlog

I've just discovered that I have the peculiar, blog-unfriendly habit of starting a blog entry, saving it as a draft, and then completely forgetting about it.  A quick check of the "List Posts"  menu option revealed a squirreled away stash of well-intentioned blog musings.  I've since posted them so as to not deprive anyone of my wisdom, but solemnly swear not to make this a habit.  Does anyone else follow this posting pattern?   I promise not to tell.

Catch 22

So I really did start out on this whole blog endeavor with the best of intentions.  However, as you can see from the time that has elapsed since my last (and first) post, life has gotten in the way of my blogging efforts. I have quickly come across an unfortunate paradox of blogging ….. the more blog-worthy events you experience, the less time you have to write about them in your blog.  In a nutshell, here is my attempt to recapture significant happenings of the last two weeks.

I got a promotion at work!  This is the most exciting update, and also the one most responsible for my bloglessness.  The good news is that I will soon be coordinating a program on my own; the bad news is that I will be finishing out my current job duties while simultaneously assuming responsibility for my new ones until a replacement is hired for my current position.  Hopefully this transitional limbo will be wrapping up sometime around the 4th of July.

Back-to-back weekend trips to see aunts and uncles – first to the Kentucky Derby, where the winning longshots ruined all my hopes of making millions at the track - then most recently to Ypsilanti, MI where another aunt and uncle are busy renovating a three story storefront building downtown and I got to escape my teeny NYC apartment and live vicarious dreams of setting up house in their walk in closets.

Tiptoe Through the Tulips

Well, it's a done deal, I've officially jumped on the blog bandwagon. Although I have contemplated doing so for some time, I was moved to act this weekend by a single item found at the Union Square Greenmarket on a rainy Saturday ......TULIPS. Not just any tulips, but amazing burgandy tulips rimmed in yellow that are so beautiful they warrant full capital letters and a desire to share them with anyone who might stumble across my new blog. With that said, Green Dilly Beans will feature my own running commentary on knitting, reading, cooking, and anything else that comes to mind. Happy Spring!
