&$@^%#($#&$

From the title of this post you can probaby guess that I don't exactly have good news to report on the knitting front. Last Monday I joined Heather huddled in the corner cursing and muttering under my breath. I had been chugging along on the hourglass sweater and had the good fortune to have Monday off from work. My vacation agenda was set: I could finish the hourglass on Monday and wear it to work on Tuesday. Perfect. Merrily I knit along, entranced (blinded) by the idea of wearing my lovely sweater with the lovely yarn, ignoring any signs that all was not going according to plan. I finished the yoke and decided to try it on before sewing down the neckline's hem. Trying to get my arms into the sleeves made it clear that I had strayed from the sweater of my dreams. I was so focused on finishing the sweater, I had conveniently forgotten to follow the pattern corrections made in the errata. Yes, the &*#@$% errata. I had dutifully reviewed it when I cast on, but by the time I made it to the yoke, I had visions of an hourglass dancing in my head, not technical pattern adjustments. For those of you who are not intimately acquainted with the hourglass errata, you should know that it corrects the raglan sleeve shaping. Without it you get a severely skewed sleeve effect, as demonstrted on my very own hourglass. Rather than splitting the raglan decreases on either side of my stitch markers, I had done all the decreases to the left of the markers. The effect was not pretty. Img_0020_3 Note the wandering stitch markers making their wayward clockwise journey around my shoulders. Img_0022_4 At first glance, the left sleeve shaping just looks a little over-eager in its sloping slant. Img_0024_3 But then the right sleeve shows the shaping at its worst. After the muttering and cursing mentioned above, and some much appreciated commiserating with Heather about our sweater woes, I came to terms with the ugly truth... I have no one to blame but myself. The main reason I was so mad was because I KNOW BETTER. Checking the pattern errata is a token lesson of Knitting 101. Not only that, I blatantly refused to acknowledge any accumulated knitting wisdom and intuition that would have indicated some serious problems unfolding. Instead, I blissfully chose to ignore all signs of pending doom and committed an act of knitting hubris, the classic case of counting chickens before they are hatched. Knitting has a maddening habit of putting cocky knitters in their place. With my mini-Monday vacation reduced to a pile of frogged yarn, I returned to work on Tuesday with the knowledge that I wouldn't have time to revisit the hourglass until the weekend. One week later, I am back at it; the Packers lousy showing on Monday night football is providing the perfect medium to tackle Round 2 of the yoke (who knew you could make a pun out of knitting and football?!). I'm down but not out, with a pending transit strike, I could be facing lots of knitting time.

Quick Knit

Look what I turned out last night! It's amazing what a little instant gratification can do to lift your spirits.

Inspriration came out of Ms. MisoCrafty by way of Craftster.  Yikes, I sound like I'm talking horse heritage.  My Kentucky uncle would be so proud.

I used strands of orange Cascade 220 and Fashion Trend Fino striping yarn held together (both of which came out of the Point / Knitty cruise goody bag) to get the Fraggle-worthy colors. The finished product is shown unblocked and will stay that way - I've decided I like the roly poly ends. For a simple rectangle, it's a great way to keep warm under a coat without adding too much extra bulk.

Let it Snow

Les_1 This was the scene that greeted me from my window on Sunday morning.  Snow!  Not much, but enough to blanket the awnings and fire escapes of Orchard Street.  Never mind that snow in New York soon turns into a dirty, slushy, treacherous mess.  Waking up to freshly fallen snow is always a treat, albeit a temporary one.

My winter wonderland soon turned to ice as I made my way through the 9-5 gig on Monday.  The culprit?  Absolutely no heat in my office building.  Despite numerous complaints, begging, and pleading from all there seems to be little hope of getting it fixed any time soon.  Rumor has it that the building owner holds the dubious distinction of being repeatedly named one of Brooklyn's Top 10 Worst Landlords.  Urban legend?  Perhaps.  I don't even know if such a list exists.  Still there's no arguing that it is damn cold in my office.  Today I head to work much better prepared in mulitple layers and wool socks.  Fingerless mitts to aid in typing have been added to the must-knit list.

A bit of warm deliverance came in the form of Knitty's Winter Issue.  Some early faves include Kate, knecklace, pomatomus, forecast, and last but not least .... tubey, courtesy of the lovely Ms. Autumn Sweater.

All I need now is a pattern for some fingerless gloves!

Nifty Thrifty

I just signed up for a swap over at Purple Pink and Orange. The month of December has participants swapping thrift store finds (with a $10 suggested spending limit). I have a hunk of vacation days to burn before year's end - after that any remaining time not spent will disappear into the human resources abyss. Exploring the world of local second hand stores seems as good a way as any to put some of this time to use.

So let's hear it....What are your favorite thrift stores in NYC? I have a MetroCard and I'm not afraid to travel, plus I've got all the time in the world, so no store is too far or too small if you deem it worthy of a pilgrimage.  I'll be sure to post pictures of my thrifting escapades.

Want in on the fun? The registration deadline is December 5, so there's still time to partake in the thrifty delights!

La Gastronomie Française

Br_1 For pure cubicle escapism, this blog is it. Chez Christine chronicles the adventures of, you guessed it, Christine, a San Franciscan ex-pat, as she slices and dices her way through training at Le Cordon Bleu. Vicarious reading at its finest, not to mention more French food than you can shake a baguette at. Bon appétit!
